Facebook PR Exec to Leave for Netflix Just a Year into the Job as Departures Continue

Just a year after joining Facebook, Rachel Whetstone, the former Uber, and Google PR executive is leaving the company. Whetstone has been hired to take the top PR spot at Netflix.

The departure of Whetstone is another in a string of high-ranking executive to exit Facebook in recent months, preceded by her boss, Elliot Schrage, who announced in June that he was planning on leaving and business development head Dan Rose who also announced his departure from the social media giant as it weathers controversy.

Whetstone, who originally was hired to head communications for WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger was pulled in to deal with Facebook’s barrage of controversy over several PR problems, including Russian misuse of the platform in the 2016 U.S. elections, the proliferation of fake content while also handling myriad criticisms related to CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg as well as COO Sheryl Sandberg.

Taking Whetstone’s position will be Caryn Marooney. She ran communications before Whetstone but had shifted focus to product communications. Whetstone will remain at Facebook for a few more months reports Recode while Facebook has yet to replace Schrage.

Other key departures of late include security chief Alex Stamos as well as business executive Dan Rose, who said last week he would be leaving.
