Meta has taken a shot at Apple’s iMessage with a new advertisement stoking the flames of rivalry between the two companies.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg posted a picture on Instagram of an ad in New York’s Penn Station that pitches Meta’s WhatsApp as more secure and with stricter privacy than Apple’s iMessage and traditional text messages.
“WhatsApp is far more private and secure than iMessage, with end-to-end encryption that works across both iPhones and Android, including group chats,” Zuckerberg posted on Instagram.

The post has been liked by nearly 40k people since it was posted Monday.
Apple’s iMessage is available only for Apple devices, so people who use those devices to text with Android users say have their messages appear as “green bubbles” rather than the blue iMessages.
Last year WhatsApp introduced encrypted backups as well as a feature that allows WhatsApp users to set new messages to automatically delete.
“All of which iMessage still doesn’t have,” Zuckerberg wrote in his post, adding that Meta is working on end-to-end encryption for Instagram messages in a comment.
Earlier this year Google also took a shot at Apple devoting a spot under its search bar online, saying that Apple converts texts sent between iPhones and Androids into SMS and MMS — decades-old methods of sending text-only messages from device to device.
