Turning Travel Journeys into a Passport for Growth

Steve Rowbotham looks at how travel journeys can provide brands with signals around consumer intent, behavior and purchasing decisions.

The concept of a consumer journey is arguably one of the most common phrases in marketing. Brands map customer touchpoints, track clicks, analyse signals and attribute conversions along an idealised common path to purchase as they pass through a sales funnel. So far, so rife with the visual metaphors for understanding how people buy. But in the real world, few journeys are quite as literal, as emotionally charged, as anticipatory or as financially significant as the actual travel booking process.

Against a backdrop of global tensions and economic pressures, the Asian travel sector is proving an attractive proposition – both in terms of activity by travellers and rising interest from holidaymakers from other parts of the globe. One study suggests that travel frequency within the region is increasing, with 73% of Gen Z travelers looking to make up to six trips this year.

Meanwhile, the PATA Asia Pacific Visitor Forecasts 2026–2028 report highlights the attractiveness of the region and rising interest in a greater variety of destinations as drivers of global demand. Both increased local traveller trip frequency and greater inbound interest are combining to make the region of considerable note when it comes to the global travel landscape.

One key asset driving this magnetism for the Asia Pac region travel sector? Traveller data, whether it’s local frequent filers and their trips or visitors from further afield, travel data is rapidly emerging as one of the more in demand assets within the current marketing landscape. Why? From the initial spark of wanderlust and inspiration all the way through to the return flight home, travel is a high-intent, multi-faceted experience. One which can tell you a lot about the people travelling. All-inclusive family trip? Glamorous cruise? Off the beaten track exploration?

For brands, learning more about this journey and the people undertaking it can yield a literal treasure trove of intent signals, paving the way to effective commercial strategies. As the advertising industry grapples with the deprecation of traditional identifiers and hunts for sustainable, effective and engaging first-party data strategies, a commerce media approach has emerged as the current leading frontier. Connect with people in the places closest to where they buy.

Yet, the true untapped superpower of this space isn’t just retail purchase data — it is travel-native commerce media. For non-endemic brands, travel data can become a true passport to growth, offering an unprecedented window into the affluent, high-intent consumer.

Decoding the Anatomy of Travel Signals

Travel is rarely an impulse buy. It is a deliberate, extended process that spans four distinct phases: Aspiration, Planning, Purchase, and Return. Each phase creates a distinct data footprint, revealing not just what a consumer might buy, but exactly who they are and how they value experiences. Looking at the trends emerging from the Asia-Pacific region at the moment, this adds greater depth to demand and interest in the area.

Each phase creates a distinct data footprint, revealing not just what a consumer might buy, but exactly who they are and how they value experiences.

High-volume Gen Z travellers are highly attractive to brands, while greater proportions of international visitors represent high potential for everything from financial services to luxury goods providers. Interest in touchpoints is multi-faceted here:

  • The Aspiration Phase: When a consumer browses luxury resorts in Amalfi or eco-lodges in Costa Rica, they aren’t just looking at places to stay for a night or five; they are signaling a lifestyle shift, a disposable income bracket, and a mindset.
  • The Planning Phase: Booking windows, destination choices, and flight classes provide concrete context. A family booking a five-ticket itinerary to Orlando in July behaves entirely differently than a solo business traveler booking a mid-week flight to Frankfurt.
  • The Purchase Phase: This is the moment of peak intent. It establishes a hard timeline. We know exactly where the consumer will be, when they will be there, and what their immediate needs will be.

The in-transit journey: As many associated brands are starting to explore, the journey itself provides multiple opportunities to engage. Transport from the home to the point of departure. Duty free shopping and in-flight or on-ship engagements. How will the traveller be getting around at their destination?

The Return Phase: The journey doesn’t end at baggage claim. Post-trip data captures shifting consumer habits, loyalty, and the immediate transition back into the domestic buying cycle.

Non-Endemic Brand Opportunities to Explore

Historically, travel data was the exclusive playground of endemic players: airlines, hotels, and car rental companies. But the utility of travel-native commerce media extends far beyond the travel ecosystem. For non-endemic brands spanning (luxury) retail, automotive, financial services, entertainment and sectors well beyond, travel signals can offer an unfair advantage. They indicate who, when, where, lifestage, preferences and likes, and much much more.

Unmatched Audience Determinism

Unlike probabilistic social media targeting or stale third-party cookies, travel data is deterministic and validated by transactions. An individual cannot fake a train ticket, a confirmed flight booking, or a hotel reservation. When a non-endemic brand dives into a travel commerce media network, they are targeting verified humans with real purchasing power, with the potential to reduce ad waste compared with less deterministic forms of targeting.

Unlike probabilistic social media targeting or stale third-party cookies, travel data is deterministic and validated by transactions.

All of that, while a customer is engaging in one of their life non-negotiables, and one of the regular annual events which is most anticipated in their regular daily lives. Try to find someone who isn’t looking forward to their next holiday and planning what they will do during the time. I’ll wait…

Exceptional Contextual Relevancy as Cookies slip from relevance

As the industry pivots toward privacy-first solutions, context rises in importance. However, traditional contextual targeting is often limited to the content of a webpage, fleeting consumer interactions which often prove too short-term for brands to act on. Travel-native commerce media offers situational context.

A premium financial services brand can target a traveler who just booked a business-class flight to London, serving them an ad for an exclusive airport lounge credit card offer, exactly when the utility of that card is peaking.

Closed-Loop Measurement

The holy grail of advertising is proving ROI. Commerce media networks built on travel data allow both endemic and non-endemic brands to conclusively close that loop. Because smart platforms can track the traveler from the initial search through to the destination and return – sometimes as they pass through multiple other touchpoints on the way like taxi brands, hotels and other holiday facilitators – advertisers can accurately measure the correlation between ad exposure and real-world outcomes. Whether that’s an online luxury purchase made mid-flight or a showroom visit upon return.

From Sightseeing to Scale: The Growth Imperative

To unlock this passport for growth, brands must stop viewing travel data as a niche tactical play and start viewing it as a core pillar of their unfolding marketing strategies.

When a consumer travels, they are relaxed, their budget elasticity may change, and they naturally enter a discovery mindset. This is often true downtime, marked by personal indulgence and relaxation away from the rigours of usual working life. They may be more open to trying new brands, upgrading their lifestyle, and indulging in premium experiences. By layering non-endemic products over travel intent signals, advertisers can reach and connect with consumers at these precise, positive psychological peaks.

The Journey Ahead

The media landscape is fracturing, but the human desire to explore remains a constant. Travel data represents one of the most resilient, privacy-compliant, and high-fidelity signal sources available to modern marketers. The dynamism of travellers within the Asia Pacific region at the moment, combined with its rising appeal to international visitors, makes this the perfect time for brands and businesses in the area to capitalise on their key data asset.

The media landscape is fracturing, but the human desire to explore remains a constant.

For commerce media businesses, managing and activating these strategies for brands, the mission is clear: we must help non-endemic brands see that a flight confirmation isn’t merely a ticket to a destination. It is a detailed blueprint of consumer intent, a potential signpost to financial capability, and ultimately, a direct route to sustainable business growth for businesses and brands throughout the Asian continent.

The passport is in our hands; it’s time to stamp it.
