Creative agency TBWA\HAKUHODO received a Bronze Clio at the 2026 Clio Awards for the Smart Eye Camera, a smartphone-based ophthalmic diagnostic device developed in collaboration with OUI Inc. The project was recognized in the Digital/Mobile: Emerging Technology category.
The Smart Eye Camera is a portable iPhone attachment developed by OUI Inc., a medical startup that originated from the Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo. The device provides diagnostic capabilities comparable to traditional slit-lamp microscopes at a fraction of the size and cost, with the stated aim of improving access to ophthalmic care in regions with limited specialist equipment.
TBWA\HAKUHODO describes its role as strategic creative partner to OUI Inc., with the shared goal of reducing global blindness by 50%. The agency says its work on the project has focused on using creativity to help scale the technology’s reach.
The Emerging Technology category, according to the Clio Awards, recognizes the use of technologies such as AI, biotech, and innovative hardware that expand possibilities for society, with judges prioritizing real-world problem-solving over novelty.
The Smart Eye Camera has been applied across remote clinics, home care, and veterinary medicine.
In a statement, TBWA\HAKUHODO said the win acknowledges the Smart Eye Camera’s approach of transforming a consumer device into a professional-grade medical tool, and that the project demonstrates how technology and human-centric design can address a global health crisis.
