In response to North Korea’s fifth nuclear test, South Korea will resume blasting loudspeakers across the border to annoy its long time nemesis. The army plans to deploy a large grid of speakers which can be heard from 20 miles away.
The content of the audio blasts will be news reports, propaganda about free thinking, the fruits of liberty and capitalism and K-Pop.
Some think it could have dangerous repercussions.
“I don’t think it is a good idea. I think this will only provoke North Korea to threaten the safety of South Koreans. Also, instead of working together with the U.S. and Japan, I think we should wait and see how the situation develops,” Seoul Resident Hong Jun-seok told Korea’s Arirang TV.
This will not be the first time South Korea has pumped up the volume on the north. In January, the South Korean army resumed a previously suspended campaign of broadcasting music and pro-democracy messages towards its neighbor after North Korea conducted its fourth nuclear test.
