Waldorf Astoria Kuala Lumpur Names Shanmugam Director of Culinary Ahead of Debut

The Indonesia-based independent marketing and media agency network is expanding across the region while building its media, creative and content capabilities.

Waldorf Astoria Kuala Lumpur has announced the appointment of Malaysian Vijayakant Shanmugam as Director of Culinary, bringing three decades of international culinary expertise to the hotel’s debut in Malaysia.

Shanmugam will oversee all culinary operations across the property’s collection of restaurants, lounges, banqueting and special events, while working alongside chefs Garima Arora and Jean-Georges Vongerichten to curate a culinary programme ahead of the hotel’s debut.

Raised in Kuala Selangor, Malaysia, Shanmugam’s career spans hospitality brands including Hilton, Shangri-La, Raffles, and Fairmont & Swissotel across Southeast Asia, the Maldives, Japan and India. He has trained in Peru, worked in Michelin-starred restaurants and worked on the launch of luxury hotels, leading multicultural culinary teams and specializing in garde manger, French and Nikkei cuisine.

His entry into Michelin-starred gastronomy began at Raffles Singapore, where he worked as executive sous chef under French executive chef Pierre Burgade. His most recent roles include Director of Culinary at Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi, where he oversaw the resort’s portfolio of 11 culinary venues including The Ledge by Dave Pynt, and Hilton Singapore Orchard, where he was part of the launch of Osteria Mozza by chef Nancy Silverton.

Drawing on his Malaysian roots and international experience, he will lead the development of a culinary programme that brings together local flavors, ingredients and traditions.

“It’s an honor to lead the culinary vision for such a highly anticipated luxury hotel opening in Kuala Lumpur, bringing Waldorf Astoria’s storied legacy to my home country and establishing the first Malaysian outpost as ‘The Greatest of Them All’,” said Vijayakant Shanmugam.
