Tumblr Tries to Make Amends with South Korea over Prostitution and Porn Content

American-based social media site Tumblr has vowed to South Korean officials to self-regulate obscene content.

This comes after last year’s rejection of a government request to delete posts related to prostitution and porn that saw Tumblr telling the Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC) that not having a physical presence in Korea meant it wasn’t regulated by Korean law.

The KCSC reportedly sent 30,200 requests to various internet service providers to delete posts related to prostitution and porn from January to June in 2017 with Tumblr accounting for over two-thirds of that, totaling 22,468.

Twitter received 1,771, Instagram 12, and Facebook five.

The KCSC said that officials held a video conference with Tumblr staff this week to discuss their push to crack down on illegal prostitution and pornography circulated on the platform.

Tumblr has been providing a Korean-language service since 2013.

Earlier this year Indonesia blocked Tumblr for a to remove pornographic content from its site.

“After investigating, we found at least 360 Tumblr accounts contained pornographic content,” ministry spokesman Noor Iza told AFP.
