Singapore Shoppers Prioritize Trust and Reliability Over Discounts

Milieu Insight research reveals how Singapore’s digitally savvy consumers are reshaping e-commerce loyalty, rewarding platforms that deliver dependable service, transparent experiences, and genuine value over price.

As Singapore’s e-commerce sector evolves into one of Southeast Asia’s most developed digital markets, new research from consumer insights firm Milieu Insight reveals a shift in what drives customer loyalty. While pricing and delivery fees remain factors, Singaporean shoppers now prioritize trust, reliability, and meaningful value-added services when choosing platforms for repeat purchases.

The findings, based on a study of online shoppers in Singapore, show that nearly half of consumers shop online at least once a week, with one in ten doing so daily. This high level of engagement underscores how deeply e-commerce is embedded in daily life—and how expectations are changing as the market matures, said the report.

“Singaporean consumers have raised the bar for what good e-commerce should look like. Today, trust, fairness, and clear accountability matter just as much as price,” added Juda Kanaprach, Co-founder and Chief Commercial Officer at Milieu Insight.

“What we’re seeing is a fundamental shift: platforms are no longer judged only on promotions, but on the consistency and integrity of the experience they deliver. Consistency in meeting these expectations will be key for brands aiming to lead the next wave of loyalty-driven growth.”

Research Highlights

Milieu Insight provided the following highlights from their research.

Reliability and Accountability Are the Cornerstones of Retention

Reliability is now one of the strongest predictors of loyalty. The study found that 41% of consumers consider trust in sellers or platforms a key factor when deciding where to shop, and over half say they would spend more with sellers who provide reliable service and consistently fast delivery.

However, the reverse is also true: 47% of shoppers say they would avoid repurchasing after experiencing late, missing, or damaged orders. Delivery performance, once a back-end concern, has now become a front-line differentiator — directly shaping how consumers perceive seller credibility.

This heightened expectation of accountability extends to platforms themselves. 86% of respondents believe e-commerce platforms should ensure their delivery partners meet high standards, and 74% prefer sellers who offer fast, dependable, and cost-effective shipping. Shoppers are sending a clear message: they expect a seamless, trustworthy experience, and a single point of accountability from product discovery to delivery.

Positive post-purchase experiences further reinforce consumer trust. 87% of Singaporean shoppers are satisfied with their most recent return or refund, highlighting how dependable after-sales support strengthens confidence and drives repeat purchases.

The New Value Equation: Experience and Assurance Over Price

As Singapore’s e-commerce market continues to evolve, shoppers are redefining what “value” means. While affordability still matters, with 60% of consumers saying discounts and free shipping influence their spending, true value now extends beyond price to encompass transparency, reliability, and meaningful service quality.

Fairness and accountability are now central to how consumers assess value. 72% of Singaporean shoppers prefer sellers with strong buyer protection and clear ratings, while 43% remain loyal even when prices are slightly higher, provided platforms deliver consistent service quality and clear policies. This demonstrates that Singapore-based shoppers are no longer swayed solely by price, but by the overall integrity and dependability of the shopping experience.

Easy returns (44%) and one-click checkout (32%) are among the strongest motivators for repeat purchases, while emerging features such as chat support (16%) and AI-powered tools (11%) are slowly gaining influence among shoppers.

When it comes to delivery and fulfillment, 57% cite delivery costs as the top area for improvement, with affordability (76%), reliability (63%), and flexibility of pick-up options (58%) emerging as the top three tenets of a good delivery experience. Hidden fees and unclear return terms, by contrast, quickly erode trust and confidence.

At the same time, convenience and dependability are shaping consumer loyalty. Easy returns (44%) and one-click checkout (32%) are among the strongest motivators for repeat purchases, while emerging features such as chat support (16%) and AI-powered tools (11%) are slowly gaining influence among shoppers. Value-added benefits such as loyalty points, vouchers, and subscription perks have also become key differentiators, with 30% of Singaporean consumers citing them as influential in their purchasing decisions.

Together, these findings mark a decisive shift: for Singapore’s digitally confident shoppers, price alone no longer defines value. Instead, it is measured by assurance and experience — the confidence that every purchase will be seamless, fair, and rewarding.

Practical Innovation Outperforms Novelty

While emerging features, such as AI-powered tools, are still gaining traction, their rising adoption signals that innovation will increasingly be defined by practicality and purpose rather than novelty. Singaporean consumers are embracing innovation with discernment — favouring tools that simplify, reassure, and enhance control, rather than those that simply entertain.

This pragmatic mindset is especially pronounced among younger digital natives. Among 18–34-year-olds, 38% engage with livestream shopping and 24% interact with AI-powered recommendations — early signs of how experience-led and personalised discovery will shape the future of shopping.

Importantly, these interactions are not just about exploration; they are driving repeat engagement. 17% of all shoppers say they are more likely to repurchase from sellers offering interactive tools, a figure that rises to one in five among younger consumers.

For e-commerce platforms, this presents a clear opportunity: innovation that builds trust, ease, and dependability — not complexity — will define the next frontier of consumer loyalty. As these younger, digitally confident segments continue to influence broader shopping behaviours, their preference for authenticity, transparency, and control will shape the evolution of Singapore’s e-commerce landscape.

Ultimately, the findings from this report point to a clear direction: innovation rooted in trust, reliability, and real consumer value will define the next phase of e-commerce in Singapore. Sellers that consistently deliver dependable, transparent, and rewarding experiences will be best placed to earn lasting loyalty and set new benchmarks for the region’s digital economy.
