Samsung recently rolled out a marketing stunt aimed at its arch-rival Apple that saw the Korean tech giant descend on the town of Appel (not a typo) where it handed out free Galaxy S9’s to 50 residents of the small Dutch town of 312 residents.
Thus, creating, as Samsung proudly proclaims, an Appel community that switched to Samsung.
The campaign is clever, if not incredibly cheesy with lines like, “Now, Samsung and Appel are best friends.” And what’s with filming the ad in portrait mode?

Samsung’s stunt is fun but not as impactful as Huawei’s social media hit that saw them handing out power banks to Apple fans as they waited in line for the new iPhone XS. Attached to the bank was a card that said, “You’ll need it.”
Huawei staff were spotted giving out free powerbanks to Apple fans queueing overnight for the new iPhone Xs and Xs Max in front of the Apple Store along Orchard Road. Well played, Huawei!
