Playful Campaign Sees Flipkart Sponsor Team Namibia, Despite Not Operating There

The funny campaign spot has been viewed nearly 25 million times since its release on February 10th of this year.

As part of a new campaign, Flipkart announced that it will sponsor the Namibian cricket team this year as part of the T20 World Cup. The announcement was shared with a playful film conceptualized and created by Leo India.

The film addresses questions about why Flipkart, a brand not available in Namibia, decided to sponsor the team. The campaign highlights that at global sporting events like the T20 World Cup, every team in a group plays the same matches and receives the same broadcast exposure. It draws on cultural connections between India and Namibia and presents the idea that when it comes to sponsorships, viewership matters more than geography.

The idea is designed to extend beyond the film through social-first storytelling and internet-led humour. The campaign is built on the belief that a creative idea works when it becomes part of public discourse, inviting curiosity, questions and participation rather than remaining confined to a single format or screen.

Using humor and cultural references between India and Namibia, the campaign highlights Flipkart’s promise of the best deals. Through the sponsorship, Flipkart positions the move as part of its approach to marketing and sponsorships.

“In high decibel sporting events like the World Cup we are always looking for ideas and opportunities that help us stand out from the crowd,” said Sachin Kamble, Chief Creative Officer, Leo South Asia..

“This unexpected partnership was a winner for us for its potential bizarreness to be a conversation starter on the internet and pairing it with Flipkart’s signature witty sense of humour; we knew we had an amazing deal.”

The campaign spot has been viewed nearly 25 million times since its release on February 10th.
