New Report Highlights ‘Gotong Royong’ as Key to Indonesia’s Future Growth

Gen X and Baby Boomers, who still hold key leadership roles, are encouraged to promote inclusion, foster open dialogue, and remain receptive to learning from younger generations.

Global communications company, Burson, has released a new report called Regeneration, which emphasizes Gotong Royong—the spirit of mutual cooperation—and cross-generational collaboration as key drivers of Indonesia’s progress. The report urges government, businesses, and civil society to work together in building inclusive, innovative, and sustainable solutions for a stronger and more prosperous nation.

The report highlights the distinct roles and aspirations of each generation in shaping Indonesia’s future. Millennials are recognized for their creativity, adaptability, and readiness to face emerging challenges, positioning them to take on leadership roles and drive innovation across environmental, technological, and economic areas. Gen Z is identified as a growing leadership force defined by its commitment to sustainability.

To support the next generation of leaders, Gen X and Baby Boomers—who continue to hold many leadership positions—are encouraged to promote inclusion, foster open dialogue, build mutual respect, and remain receptive to learning from younger generations.

“Through our Regeneration report, we combine our deep market expertise with insights powered by our proprietary AI tools to deliver fresh perspectives and practical strategies to help Indonesians accelerate the nation’s progress and reputation on the world stage.”

At its core, Regeneration is framed around four essential pillars shaping Indonesia’s future: environment, economy, technology and leadership, each reflecting the country’s intertwined challenges and opportunities.

  • The need for environmental resilience: 80% of respondents said that awareness of environmental quality is shaped more by tangible, visible factors such as clean air, clean water and public health than by climate commitments, which are often seen as abstract.
  • The critical role of business in economic development: Many respondents recognize that businesses play a critical role in driving the national economy. More than half of respondents said that corporations should adopt sustainable production practices, develop recyclable products and minimize waste to enable an economy of the future.
  • The role of technology in bridging social inequality: 68% of respondents responded that technology has the potential to reduce economic and social inequality.
  • The role of cross-generational leadership: Across generations, 91% of respondents said that leaders play a critical role in driving environmental action.

The report finds that revival is vital to Indonesia’s journey towards a stronger future. Nearly all respondents (97%) responded that investing in growth and development of its citizens is key to achieving Indonesia Emas (Golden Indonesia).

“The insights from the Regeneration report mark a new paradigm for shaping an inclusive and sustainable Indonesia,” said Harry Deje, Chief Operating Officer, Burson Indonesia.

“We remain committed to continuous innovation and this report demonstrates our ability to deliver strategic, research-driven solutions. By providing comprehensive insights across sectors and social dynamics, we are well positioned to help businesses navigate today’s challenges.”
