Meta’s head in India has left after four years to join rival Snap to head up the company’s APAC business.

Mohan most recently served as VP & Managing Director of India for Meta, and previously held executive roles across the region, including founding CEO of Disney’s Hotstar.

In a memo shared with Branding in Asia, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel said, “We believe that Ajit’s leadership will enable us to accelerate our growth across APAC, and we could not be more thrilled to have Ajit joining the Snap team.”

He went on to say that as President of APAC, Mohan “will lead our India, Australia & New Zealand, China, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Korea businesses.”

Ajit will join Snap’s executive team and report to Jerry Hunter,” Spiegel added.

“Similar to the global structure in Americas and EMEA, our regional APAC sales teams will report to the new APAC President, with Kathryn Carter (KC) and her current APAC sales teams, as well as the India and China sales teams reporting to Ajit.”

Speaking about his departure from Meta in a LinkedIn post Mohan wrote: “The thing that I am most proud of about my tenure at Meta (Facebook) is the team that we built in India. And helming this was an awesome group of people who I am grateful to for their passion, their commitment to the mission and, most of all, for their inspiring leadership through good and tough times.”

Snapchat has been a strong market for Snapchat according to the company, hitting 100 million monthly active users one year ago, with partnerships with leading local platforms like Flipkart and Zomato.

Snap added that the app enjoys high engagement levels in the country across content, creators, and augmented reality. “For example Discover, our in-app content tab featuring select partners, had over 140 million Indian Snapchatters watch a show in 2022,” the company said.

According to Snap, the APAC region contains approximately 75% of the total addressable markets of 13+ smartphone users who do not yet use Snapchat.

Manish Chopra, director and head of partnerships at Meta India will take over as interim head according to Reuters.
