John Malkovich Asks ‘What the F*** is Going on?’ in Superbowl Spots for Squarespace

Squarespace has tapped John Malkovich for a series of very funny spots for Super Bowl 2017 that sees the famed actor trying to get the URL JohnMalkovich.com, for the launch of his men’s fashion line.

Squarespace worked with JohnXHannes on the campaign and the films were directed by Smuggler’s Miles Jay.

He gets in touch with the other John Malkovich. “You think when people contact JohnMalkovich.com they are actually looking for you?” he says over the phone. “Maybe, maybe they are looking for me.”

Here is the longform spot, giving insight into the very real story about Malkovich going into the fashion biz.

Squarespace chief creative officer David Lee says this campaign came out of conversations he had with Malkovich. He told Fast Company that the important thing in their campaigns is keeping it real.

“Everything we do is real. There are no gimmicks,” says Lee. “We actually did pull off a live blogging platform with Key & Peele. We actually made an e-commerce store to sell sleeping tapes by Jeff Bridges. For John Malkovich, he needed an e-commerce store to sell his clothing and we did that. it’s all rooted in real case studies. For us, the amazing thing is, around the Super Bowl ad, John had a real story about someone else owning his domain. So the ad is rooted in truth.”
