KFC Launches Virgin ‘Mojito Girl’ Beverage in China to Appeal to Chinese Youth

KFC China, working with McCann Worldgroup Shanghai, has launched “Mojito Girl”, a non-alcoholic cocktail created to appeal to Chinese youth.

The colorful 1-minute campaign spot was directed by Japanese director, Tsuyoshi Taniyama and stars Chinese actress, Xing Lu (Ruka).

The underlying brand message from KFC and Ruka about the Virgin Mojito: “I am the Queen of Natural High. I don’t need to drink to have a great time.”

A tad bit of sexual innuendo? Perhaps. Your call.

It’s quite a beautiful piece of cinematic work, regardless of your take on anything else –philosophically or otherwise. And keeping teens off the sauce is always good thing.

Not sure what the boys are supposed to drink, but perhaps that’s coming later.

“This campaign was a bold move for us as this was the first time we are using a different approach and tonality to speak to our audience,” said Jasmine Yang, Senior Marketing Director of KFC. “The campaign has generated great social buzz across various social media platforms. We are extremely pleased with McCann Worldgroup Shanghai and hope to work closely with the team to develop more innovative ways to communicate with our audience.”

“Every cocktail has its own personality”, said Sally Lee, Group Creative Director of McCann Shanghai. “Hence, we have created this cute and chic character who exudes a little bit of playfulness and goofiness.”
