Heineken Laos has launched an identity and packaging refresh for Namkhong, its beer brand in Laos. Designed by Lonsdale, the new look aims to reposition Namkhong toward a younger, urban audience with a confident visual identity rooted in the concept of “sabai sabai” — comfortable, relaxed, and joyfully at ease, said a release.
Historically popular in rural areas, Namkhong seeks to expand its presence in a market featuring both local and international competitors. Named after the Mekong River, one of Southeast Asia’s major waterways, the brand’s updated design draws inspiration from life’s journey and the idea of “going with the flow,” using visual elements that extend consistently across cans, bottles, and cartons.
“The refined wordmark introduces subtle wave details referencing the river, creating a sense of movement within sharpened, contemporary typography.”
“The reimagined boat icon has evolved from a laborious race symbol into a joyful, collective rowing experience – friends moving forward together down the river of life – with motion lines and wave accents that emphasize momentum. The rowers themselves have been redrawn to help create the relaxed, friendly, and distinctly Asian feeling.”
“Redesigning Namkhong was all about telling the story of Laos’ most important river in a bold, confident, and modern way,” said Katrina Crescenzo, Associate Creative Director at Lonsdale Asia.
“Working with Heineken Lao Brewery, we also got to tell a David and Goliath story; helping an underdog brand stand tall against powerful brands. The end goal is a unified identity and pack system that is instantly legible at shelf, culturally resonant, and effortless to share in social settings, positioning Namkhong as the natural choice for those sabai sabai moments.”
