HDFC Bank and Kinnect Turn Laziness Into Fraud Prevention Message

“Fraudsters use panic and urgency to manipulate people into making quick mistakes.”

HDFC Bank and creative agency Kinnect have launched ‘Vigil Aunty Says – Laziness Saves’, a seven-episode stand-up comedy special addressing digital fraud awareness. The series premiered on JioHotstar and is now available to stream.

The special is a new format for Vigil Aunty, HDFC Bank’s fraud-awareness platform. The campaign centers on the idea that pausing before acting on urgent-seeming requests, such as clicking suspicious links or sharing OTPs, can help prevent fraud, including scams involving Digital Arrest.

The series features comedians Aakash Gupta, Gaurav Kapoor, Ramkumar, Harsh Gujral, Sonu Venugopal, Munawar Faruqui and Kenny Sebastian. Each comedian builds a set around a different form of everyday laziness, arriving at the message that taking a few extra moments before clicking, sharing or responding can help people stay safe.

The campaign also includes an outdoor execution: a billboard that appears half-finished, with workers seemingly too lazy to complete the installation, carrying the message ‘Laziness Has Spread Everywhere’.

“Fraudsters use panic and urgency to manipulate people into making quick mistakes,” said Ravi Santhanam, Chief Marketing Officer & Group Head, HDFC Bank.

“‘Vigil Aunty Says – Laziness Saves’ intends to talk to audiences in a language they love – comedy. Vigil Aunty, along with India’s top stand-up comedians, will spread awareness on the modus operandi used by fraudsters. We are delighted to leverage the network of JioHotstar in this endevaour to reach a wide audience to share the message of staying alert while transacting on digital platforms.”

“We recognised that engaging today’s audiences means speaking their language,” said Jahid Ahmed, Senior Vice President – Head of Growth and Digital Marketing, HDFC Bank.

“With stand-up comedy now resonating across generations, we saw an opportunity to make digital safety a conversation that people genuinely want to engage with. Fraudsters thrive on fake urgency, so we flipped the script, showing people that pausing, being ‘lazy’ can actually be the ultimate cheat code to staying safe from fraud.”

“Vigil Aunty has demonstrated the power of building a sustained and culturally relevant platform around an important public-interest issue,” said Chandni Shah, CEO, Kinnect.

“With ‘Vigil Aunty Says – Laziness Saves’, we saw an opportunity to take that platform into a completely new format, bringing together entertainment, education and popular culture. By turning fraud awareness into something people would actively choose to watch, the integrated campaign makes an important behavioural message more accessible to all.”

“Humour can make people engage with subjects they would otherwise avoid or tune out of,” said Yogesh Mani Pradhan, Group ECD, Kinnect.

“Bringing together seven brilliant comedians allowed us to turn a serious public-safety message into something people would actively choose to watch.”
