Former Korean Model Sues Asiana over Spilled Ramen Burns

An Asiana Airlines passenger has filed suit against the carrier asking for 200 million won ($171,000) claiming she suffered serious burns after a bowl of ramen was spilled on her by a flight attendant in March of last year.

The passenger, a former model who now runs a bakery, and is identified only by her surname Jang due to strict Korean libel laws, was flying in business class from Incheon to Paris when the incident took place.

“I can’t continue work at the bakery either because I have developed an extreme fear of working near 800-degree hot ovens.”

According to the Korea Herald, Jang “suffered from second- and third-degree burns on her lower abdomen, thighs and reproductive organs, and claimed that it would require over 10 years of treatment such as skin graft, and that even with such treatment full recovery would be difficult.”

Jang also claims that the flight crew refused her request to check for any medical staff onboard and that the aircraft was not equipped with an emergency medical kit –leaving Jang to endure the painful flight with ice packages and Tylenol.

Along with physical damages, Jang is also suing for psychological stress.

“I had been planning to continue my career in broadcasting, fashion and hair design, using my physical beauty as my strength, but that’s become impossible because of the hideous burns,” Jang said in a statement.

“I can’t continue work at the bakery either because I have developed an extreme fear of working near 800-degree hot ovens.”

Asiana has reportedly counter-offered 61 million won ($52,000) to cover Jang’s medical expenses. According to Yonhap news, Asiana contends that it was Jang who accidentally knocked over the tray where the noodles were placed.

According to an Asiana official: “(Upon the accident) the crew took appropriate measures such as disinfecting the wounds with the help of a doctor on board. We plan to work for a smooth compromise. We regret that such an accident took place on board our airline.”
