Facebook Appoints Hotstar CEO Ajit Mohan as Managing Director in India

Facebook has appointed Hotstar CEO, Ajit Mohan as managing director and vice-president of Facebook India, a position that will see him tasked with driving Facebook’s overall strategy in India.

The move emphasizes the importance the social media platform places on the massive market in India, said David Fischer, vice-president of business and marketing partnerships at Facebook.

“India is one of the largest and most strategically important countries for Facebook,” said Fischer. “As we think about what it will take to achieve our mission of bringing people together and building community, we know that investment in India is critical.”

Mohan’s appointment comes a year after Umang Bedi resigned as the managing director of Facebook India, 15 months after taking over the role. Facebook India and South Asia director Sandeep Bhushan has acted as its interim managing director.

Mohan has served as chief executive of Hotstar, a streaming platform owned by Twenty-First Century Fox’s Star India arm, since April 2016, where he oversaw the streaming of Indian Premier League cricket which set a global benchmark with 8.26 million viewers logging onto the platform for the final this year.

“I am delighted to take on the mantle of shaping Facebook’s charter in India. It is a unique opportunity to shape the agenda of a company that has brought the world closer together in one of the most exciting markets in the world. I look forward to championing India in Facebook and working with stakeholders across the spectrum to help build deep and meaningful communities across the country” said Mohan in a statement.

According to Reuters, Facebook is also looking for a country head for WhatsApp.
