Dating in the Asia Pacific – Tinder Study Charts Modern Trends

Once taboo in conservative societies, online dating is now a primary way for young adults in Asia-Pacific to form relationships, according to Tinder research.

Young adults today view dating apps as the leading way to meet potential partners, with online dating emerging as the most common method (48%), surpassing shared hobbies (37%), the workplace (31%), and school (30%).

This is according to Tinder’s Modern Day Dating in Asia Pacific report, which surveyed young dating app users across seven countries in the region. The study highlights how dating apps have become a primary avenue for forming relationships, particularly as traditional spaces for meeting partners evolve.

It also explores the influence of cultural expectations, traditional values, and technology on modern dating, featuring insights from relationship and dating experts across APAC.

“Once considered taboo in conservative societies with traditional courtship norms, online dating has now become a primary way for young adults in Asia-Pacific to form romantic relationships,” Tinder said in a release.

“As Gen Z comes of age, what comes to the forefront is how, increasingly, paradoxes dominate the world that they currently live in – and there is no context where these dualities are more evident than in modern dating.”

88% of dating app users surveyed say that at least a few of their romantic relationships have started on a dating app with one in five (21%) amongst those surveyed stating that all of their romantic relationships have started via dating apps, as opposed to meeting through other means.

A survey of 7,000 18-25-year-old dating app users polled in Australia, India, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam in July 2024, conducted by OnePoll.

Tinder provided the following highlights from the research

Ambition meets Affection: Gen Z’s Vision of Work-Love Balance

There’s no denying that Gen Z is deeply reflective about their life choices, spending time on the big questions that shape their future. Amidst all the buzz, there’s constant chatter about their supposed retreat from romance – but are Gen Zs in APAC really falling out of love with love? Far from it.

When it comes to their top priorities in the next three years, Gen Zs in Asia Pacific are equally split between finding a long-term romantic partner (30%) and progressing in their career (30%). And in the next seven years, 28% see getting married as their top priority, edging out other goals such as career progression (26%) and personal growth and well-being (24%).

Breaking Boundaries: Gen Zs in APAC Championing Fluidity and Openness

Gen Z is a generation of daters that is notably more open to the concepts of gender and sexual fluidity, with 73% of respondents surveyed expressing this openness. For many, fluidity in relationships and identity goes beyond traditional labels. About 37% of young adult daters polled define fluidity as a way of understanding and expressing one’s full self – encompassing not just gender and sexuality, but also race, social class, and other dimensions of identity.

Such an open-minded mentality doesn’t just stop there. Gen Zs in APAC are redefining relationship boundaries, with a striking openness to dating people from diverse backgrounds and locations. A significant 69% are open to dating individuals from different races and cultures, and 67% are willing to start relationships with someone living in a different country, demonstrating their flexibility and the role of technology in bridging long-distance gaps.

Out with the Old, In with the Honest: Gen Z in APAC are Defining Dating on their Own Terms

Two in three Gen Z (66%) in APAC say that their generation is challenging dating and relationship standards that were passed down from previous generations and 69% say that dating is healthier and more focused on being honest, open and prioritizing mental well-being today than it was for previous generations.

Feeling comfortable and safe throughout a first date ranks as the top measure of a successful date for 37% of young adult singles, emphasizing their need for emotional security. 35% of them point to having fun as a key metric, and 34% prioritize feeling respected and valued. Having a physical attraction to the other person ranked the lowest amongst the list of available choices (28%), revealing that Gen Z are seeing a well-rounded experience rooted in trust, respect, and enjoyment.

From Casual Chats to Clear Labels: APAC Daters Opting to Define the Relationship

Gen Zs in APAC go on to define their romantic relationships in an intentional manner, with a remarkable 92% believing it’s important to establish clarity about where they stand. Among them, 62% prefer to have “the talk” in a formal, straightforward manner, ensuring both partners are on the same page regarding their expectations and relationship status.

Another major driver behind healthier dating standards in APAC is the fact that 87% of young adult singles are seeking equal partnerships in their relationships. For them, it’s not just about companionship; it’s about building relationships grounded in mutual respect and collaboration. Hence, their dating journey emphasizes behaviors such as valuing their partner’s opinions and priorities (49%), working together toward shared goals (47%), and providing consistent mutual support and commitment (47%).

Charm, Care and Confidence: Chivalry Gets a Modern Makeover in APAC

Is equality then driving chivalry out of modern dating? Not quite—but today’s version of chivalry looks very different from the fairy-tale romance of yesterday’s novels.

Instead of traditionally gendered expectations like paying for the bill (28%) or walking on the traffic side of the pavement (29%), dating app users now see actions such as being on time (37%), maintaining respectful online conversations (36%), and ensuring they get home safely (35%) as stronger displays of care. This shift reflects a clear preference for thoughtful, meaningful gestures over outdated norms, shaping a more authentic approach to modern chivalry.

Hurdles of the Heart: Navigating the Challenges of Modern Dating

Modern dating may have had a healthy glow-up, but it’s still far from easy. Young adult singles in APAC cite managing emotions (32%), navigating emotional intimacy (31%), and handling rejection or disagreements (31%) as their top challenges, with only 1% saying they don’t struggle with any aspect of dating. On first dates, concerns shift to safety and security (28%), worries about chemistry and compatibility (24%), and the fear of rejection or disappointment (23%).

Is AI the New Wingperson for APAC Daters Facing Modern Romance Challenges?

Many adult singles in APAC see AI as a helpful resource for enhancing specific aspects of their dating journey: 65% say they would use AI to help them choose the best photos for their profiles, ensuring they make a strong first impression. Meanwhile, 67% would turn to AI for assistance in crafting bios, seeking inspiration for words and phrases that authentically reflect their personality.

Additionally, 68% of daters surveyed believe that AI could play a role in helping them find common ground with potential matches, particularly by suggesting topics to break the ice and start conversations. This demonstrates AI’s potential to ease the initial anxiety of interaction, making it easier to connect with others in meaningful ways.
