Watch the B Movie ‘Trailer’ Trump Played for North Korea’s Kim Jong Un

While there is little dispute that the United States is one of the most creative countries in the world in the area of filmmaking, there is little of that to be seen in a four-minute U.S. National Security Council-produced video that Trump played for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the recent Singapore summit.

While we appreciate the underlying message and the effort and are thrilled with the summit results, the filmmaking could have been done better for such a historic occasion.

Positioned as a movie trailer by “Destiny Pictures”, the four-minute film is a painful watch if you’re a movie aficionado, with the cinematography, script and even the typography all combining to create what comes off as B-movie filmmaking effort – at best.

The “trailer” features a mix of video and stills of North and South Korea, combining black and white imagery when referencing the war along with colorful imagery of other parts of the world proclaimed as places where “the light of prosperity has burned bright.”

Here’s a sampling of the narration related to the preceding North and South Korea summit:

“The past doesn’t have to be the future. Out of the darkness can come the light and the light of hope can burn bright. What if, a people that share a common and rich heritage, can find a common future? Their story is well known but what will be their sequel?”

Check it out and you decide – maybe we’re just movie snobs:

“The video was created by the NSC to help the President demonstrate the benefits of complete denuclearization, and a vision of a peaceful and prosperous Korean Peninsula,” Garrett Marquis, an NSC spokesman, said in a statement.

Trump, as per his unabashed self-promoting style, thought it was awesome.

And, while the NSC said they made it, Trump also proclaimed credit for being on the production team — twice in the same statement to the press.

“We had it made up,” Trump said when asked about the video. “I hope you liked it. I thought it was good. I thought it was interesting enough to show. One in English and one in Korean. And we had it made up. I showed it to him today. Actually, during the meeting — toward the end of the meeting. And I think he loved it.”

Kim Jong Un’s father, Kim Jong Il, was long reported to be an avid foreign movie buff. If his son inherited any of that then he no doubt sat watching this amateurish piece of work thinking to himself,  Damn! I can negotiate just about anything with these folks!

We’re glad the negotiations went well and we wish the best for the two countries, but perhaps next time allow the filmmaking for the filmmakers and the peacemakers for peace.

Here is the full transcript:

Seven billion people inhabit planet Earth. Of those alive today, only a small number will leave a lasting impact. And only the very few will make decisions or take actions that renew their homeland and change the course of history.

History may appear to repeat itself for generations. Cycles that seem to end. There have been times of relative peace and times of great tension.

While this cycle repeats, the light of prosperity and innovation has burned bright for most of the world.

History is always evolving and there comes a time when only a few are called upon to make a difference. What difference will the few make? Out of the darkness can come the light and the light of hope can burn bright.

What is a people that share a common and rich heritage can find a common future? Their story is well known. But what will be their sequel?

Destiny Pictures presents a story of opportunity. A new story. A new beginning. Out of peace. Two men, two leaders, one destiny.

A story about a special moment in time when a man is presented with one change that may never be repeated. What will he choose? To show vision and leadership? Or not?

There can only be two results: one of moving back, or one of moving forward.

A new world can begin today, one of friendship, respect and goodwill. Be part of that world, where the doors of opportunity are ready to be opened. Investment from around the world, where you can have medical breakthroughs, an abundance of resources, innovative technology and new discoveries.

What is? Can history be changed? Will the world embrace this change? And when will this moment in history begin?

It comes down to a choice, on this day, in this time, at this moment. The world will be watching, anticipating, hoping. Will this leader choose to advance his country and be part of a new world? Be the hero of his people?

Will he shake the hand of peace and enjoy prosperity like he has never seen? A great life, or isolation? Which path will he choose?

Featuring President Donald Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un, in a meeting to remake history. To shine in the sun. One moment. One choice.

What if? The future remains to be written.

Ouch.
