Obviously, we can’t catch everything when it comes out, but some things we come across later and feel compelled to share.
Our friends over at Best Ads on TV posted a 2014 advertisement featuring “Ninja Tinja” also known as the “Poo Ninja”, from a few years back.
We did a little digging and found out it was part of a full on campaign created by Fortune Indonesia for UNICEF to battle public defecation in Indonesia.
According to the campaign website www.tinjutinja.com, Indonesia has the second highest number of people practicing open defecation. ”
“This significantly impacts on not only the environment but critically also on people’s health, especially that of children,” says UNICEF. “Every hour between 15 and 22 children die in Indonesia – in most cases from preventable diseases like diarrhea and pneumonia which can be drastically reduced by good sanitation and hygiene.”
UNICEF and Fortune Indonesia set out to do something about it.
The TV ads
One of the spots is quite stark in its message. If people don’t stop taking a shit in public, your children’s lives are at stake. Here is Ninja Tinja relaying just that in a kidnapping video scenario.
Here is another encouraging people punch the poo and knock open defecation out.
No word on the effectiveness of the campaign but we hope it’s working. The TV spots have certainly left a mark on us.
