Axis Communications and Forsman & Bodenfors have collaborated on what is being dubbed as the world’s first object detection orchestra, transforming AI-driven video surveillance cameras into musical instruments.
The creative experiment reimagines Richard Strauss’s Also Sprach Zarathustra—best known from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey—using objects such as tennis balls, a coffee cup, and a fire extinguisher in place of traditional instruments.
As these objects move through the cameras’ field of view, AI-based analytics translate their motion into musical notes in real time, turning surveillance devices from passive observers into responsive instruments.
The project was developed by Forsman & Bodenfors together with Axis Communications to demonstrate the potential of AI and camera technology for creative applications beyond security.
Swedish music producer Jonas Quant, known for his work with Kylie Minogue, No Doubt, and Hurts, took on the challenge of composing for this unconventional ensemble.
