Alibaba Founder Jack Ma Sells His Own Painting for $5.4 Million

Chinese artist Zeng Fanzhi and Jack Ma - Sotheby

A painting by Alibaba founder Jack Ma and Chinese artist Zeng Fanzhi was purchased for $5.4 million at a Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong Sunday. Not a bad price at all –considering that it’s 17 times  more than the highest estimate of what the painting would go for.

Even better, all that cash will go toward charity to promote environmental awareness –something that dear old China could surely use.

The piece, titled “Paradise”, which is basically a circle shaped portrait of the planet earth, is an oil on canvas painting that Ma and Fanzhi did in 2014.

Ma was present for a tour of Sotheby’s on Sunday afternoon before the auction –checking out other works by Modigliani, Degas and Willem de Kooning.

Ma told reports that “it was an honor” to have his painting sold for charity, though he has no plans to pursue a career in art. Really?

Zeng Fanzhi, on the other hand, is one of China’s pre-eminent contemporary artists. His famed painting “The Last Supper” broke a record for an Asian living artist when it was snatched up $23.3 million at 2013 Sotheby’s auction.
