Airbnb Stays up 40% in Japan With 4 million Foreign Visitors Checking in

As Japan moves toward enacting a law allowing residents nationwide to offer their homes for lodging, Airbnb is booming in Japan with an estimated 4 million foreign travelers using Airbnb’s service to stay in private homes during the year ended in March. This marks a sizable increase of about 40%.

The site lists 49,000 lodgings in Japan as of April, which is up about 50% on the year as well.

The Japan National Tourism Organization says 24.8 million people visited Japan during the year, including the estimated figure for the final month. The reported noted that Airbnb tracks stays by locations and not by individuals. Therefor, one person staying at three different lodgings would count as three guests.
